If you\u2019ve ever gone into work despite feeling ill then you\u2019re not alone.\u00a0\u00a0While the average number of sick days taken by employees varies between countries, it\u2019s declining year on year.<\/p>\n

So why do so many of us go to work even when we are sick? The phenomenon of going into work when we are\u00a0unwell\u00a0is also known as presenteeism\u00a0and it can be caused by a number of factors.<\/p>\n

Many workers justify the decision to come into work while sick because they believe their\u00a0work would otherwise accumulate\u00a0during their\u00a0absence\u00a0and\u00a0still be waiting for them when they return.\u00a0In addition, some employees fear that their jobs could be at risk\u00a0if they are away for\u00a0a period of prolonged illness.<\/p>\n

Unlike absenteeism, presenteeism it is a relatively new phenomenon and scientific research on the topic is limited, which means that there is no single definition.\u00a0\u00a0For example, in the USA presenteeism focuses on losses in labour productivity, which can also be attributed to the psychological wellbeing of employees. In Singapore, the term may also refer to the practice where employees stay in the office even after their work is done to wait till their bosses leave.<\/p>\n

The impact of presenteeism on business<\/b><\/p>\n

Although\u00a0working while sick\u00a0means\u00a0an\u00a0employee\u00a0is taking fewer\u00a0sick days, in reality\u00a0this\u00a0does\u00a0not\u00a0benefit\u00a0their\u00a0employer\u00a0–\u00a0quite the contrary!\u00a0Presenteeism increases the likelihood of\u00a0cardiovascular disease\u00a0and other poor health conditions\u00a0that\u00a0lead to long-term absences.\u00a0\u00a0The costs of presenteeism\u00a0are\u00a0also\u00a0higher than those caused by absenteeism due to illness, meaning that\u00a0there is no benefit\u00a0to anyone.<\/p>\n

Road to recovery<\/b><\/p>\n

In light of this, if an employee is unwell it is usually best practice to\u00a0stay at home and return only after complete recovery.\u00a0This will help to reduce the spread of infection. It\u2019s\u00a0also worth taking steps to ensure stress levels are\u00a0minimised.\u00a0After all, increases\u00a0in stress weaken\u00a0our\u00a0immune system and this\u00a0in turn\u00a0makes\u00a0us\u00a0more prone to illnesses such as cold and\u00a0influenza. This is one of many reasons why avoiding stress is so important.<\/p>\n

Preventing presenteeism<\/b><\/p>\n

To reduce the likelihood of being impacted by presenteeism, companies\u00a0should\u00a0provide employees with\u00a0the necessary personnel\u00a0to manage the workload\u00a0and\u00a0a good working environment (e.g. office equipment) that\u00a0promotes\u00a0a happier, healthier workplace.<\/p>\n

Implementing occupational health management\u00a0can\u00a0also\u00a0help to\u00a0reduce stress and promote physical\u00a0well-being. This also includes personnel management with regular feedback meetings.\u00a0In principle, every employer is obliged to carry out a risk assessment (Labour Protection Act) in order to filter out possible risks for employees and initiate appropriate measures.<\/p>\n
